Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why did you create
this site?
First
a little FACT. Unless specified, all of the photos and letters on
this site are from my own collection. I thought it would be nice to
share them with everyone and at the same time honoring all who have fought
in our country's wars and conflicts. I hope it is a fitting tribute
and when you are done you have a better appreciation for our veterans.
2. I could swear I have seen some of these photographs before.
Explain.
Some of the photos, specifically the Pacific Theater WWII
ones were sets that were made available to the soldiers and others which
were made available to the public. I refer to these as original
because I have the photos in my collection and scanned them in
myself. I did not scan any photo in from any book or magazine unless
specifically mentioned and credited.
3. Can you do my homework or assignment?
Nope. I didn't like doing it when I was in school
and I certainly don't want to do it now. (especially
since I think I'm getting dumber as I get older!) However, if you
need help being pointed in the right direction for info, I will do my best
to guide you. The search engine on my main page is pretty good.
4. I am looking for information on a relative or a relative's unit
during the war. Can you help?
There is a site on the internet called Military Unit
Histories. They can point you in the right direction and should be of
great use.
5. FACT: Many people have asked me about specific things
during the war such as the origins of certain terminology and other facts
which I simply do not know. I am simply a collector of war ephemera
and photos. Feel free to ask, though, I may be able to point you in
the right direction.
6. Do you buy war photos and letters and how much would you pay?
Yes I buy war photos and photo albums from all branches
of service and all wars. Purchase prices depends
on contents and era. I can give you a fair price for them. When
you sell your photos to me, I keep them. I will not turn around and
sell them to make a profit. I believe collections and photo albums
should be kept as a whole and not split up. And, if the photos are
real interesting, they may end up on the site for the whole world to get a
look at. (Of course donations would
be great too!)
7. Do you buy anything else war related?
I have a friend who owns an Army/Navy store and he buys
all sorts of military memorabilia. He
can be contacted at:
bunkerorders@aol.com
His website, is: www.bunkermilitary.com
8. How come the dates next to each category do not reflect the
real dates of some of the wars? I started this site from the
strict perspective of the American side of the war. As my collection grows and expands to
other allied countries photos and ephemera I will correct the dates to show
their involvement as well.
9. What happened to your guestbook?
Ah, that was a rookie thing and a self-serving tool that
I no longer need.
10. Can I use your
pictures for my assignment?
Yes. Any student can use anything on my site for their
homework. (Sneak a credit in for me)
11. Can I use your pictures for commerical
use?
Ask me first and tell me what it is for. Many people
have asked to use my photos for various endeavors and I have no problem
with it as long as you credit the source: Me. Thanks.
12. Can I use the pictures for my own website?
Generally, no. Unless it's for a veteran's tribute
site of some sort and I would want either credit or a link back to my
page. Please don't "steal" the photos. I didn't want
to watermark them because that takes away from the photo.
13. Why did you put those disgusting pictures of dead people on
your page?
There is nothing pretty about war and I hope the pictures
convey that. I speak to a lot of veterans from WWII to Vietnam and
not a single one of them enjoyed seeing people blown apart. The pictures
bring a harsh reality to war. When I look at them I think of the
families that were destroyed by that one single death. The job had to
be done but I wanted to show the cost as well.
14. Why don't you include the entire letter in your letter sections?
Most letters from WWI and up were censored for
content. And that pretty much means they mostly contained personal
conveyances and very little war-related information. I included the
best parts which hopefully, when combined, paint a picture through a
soldier's thoughts. The Civil War excerpts are far more graphic but
even with those I edited out the personal stuff.
15. Your site would
be better if it had facts and dates.
True. But the purpose of this site is to show you the personal photos
and letters of the average man in the field.
Final Thought: Don't let the only place a veteran is
appreciated to be the VFW's and American Legions. Thank a veteran for
what he's done and what he's been through. He really would appreciate
it.
